Gene expression and other things

Days of having hair (photo by Ling Kam Wing).

This is the website of Martin Jakt, who somehow has ended up spending most of his working life looking at gene expression in lots of different ways. If you don't know Martin or don't care about gene expression then there probably isn't much here for you to look at. Though there are some quite nice pictures, and a little of genome structure and some stuff about multidimensional scaling, and then there's some microscopy stuff. And some nice pictures of snow.

About the picture

The above picture was taken quite a few years back when I was a PhD student in Hong Kong. It was taken by my fellow student (Francis) Ling Kam Wing who at the time was getting into photography and making his own prints. When the dept. of Biochemistry got it's first website (hosted on an SGI O2, or possibly Octane) set up by the very multi-talented Dr. Brian Wong, he put this picture on my website along with a cute caption. I never did anything with that web page, but when setting up this site, I thought it might be amusing to dig out the picture. I obviously had no backup of the picture, and the website was long gone. However, I remembered that my brother used to have a link to my site when he was studying in Sweden, and for some obscure reason that site is still available. From there, with the old URL, it was easy to dig out the picture from the wayback machine. And it is still there last time I checked. Being somewhat sentimental, I couldn't help but reconstruct the old page here as well.

The moral of the story is of-course that the web is a wonderful backup machine that doesn't forget things. Having said that, I did read, some time back, that the wayback machine was having trouble getting funded. But these days Google or the NSA will probably fulfil that function.
