We moved from Tokyo to Bodö at the end of March (2015), arriving on the 28th after a somewhat arduous journey from London involving two unplanned overnight stays in hotels due to reasonably heavy snows in Oslo. We thought that it might be somewhat interesting to try out living in a small community in the far north after having spent the last 20 years or so living in large cities in the far east. Bodö, is certainly small, but the surrounding natural landscape is pretty awesome. Apart from the city itself, which lies on a flat peninsula jutting out into the north Atlantic, everywhere around is either mountain, sea or fjord. We do not have a car yet (and there are hardly any buses on weekends), and so have not yet been able to explore very much; but you don't have to walk very far to find beautiful vistas. Below are a few photos we took walking around here.
Please note that although it is reasonably snowy around the city, it's not actually cold in Bodö. The temperatures in the city have generally been between around 4 to 6 degrees during daytime, and there is a bit of a tendency for the wind to blow, and rain, sleet or snow to fall. But it's warm indoor (but not too warm), and outside you wear reasonable clothing, so it's pretty rare that you actually feel cold. This very much in contrast to our experience of living in Japan, or even Hong Kong for that matter.
Apologies to any Norwegians reading this for my use of the swedish 'ö'. I have enough trouble with using a Swedish keyboard layout on my laptop, and really don't feel like installing the Norwegian layout as well.
View north towards Landegode. Note the sailing boat in the bottom left corner. In Bodö it is warm enough to sail all year round. (2015:04:03)
View southeast from Bodösjöen (the sort of bay / fjord lying south, south west from Bodö. (2015:04:04)
